What is boron carbide
Boron carbide, also known as tetraboron carbide or black diamond, has a molecular formula of B4C, usually a gray-black powder. Commonly known as artificial diamond, it is one of the three hardest materials known (the other two are diamond and cubic boron nitride). It is a boride with high hardness. It does not react with acid and alkali solutions, is easy to manufacture and is relatively cheap. It is widely used in the grinding, grinding and drilling of hard materials. In addition, it can also be used in armor, body armor and many other industrial applications of tank cars.

Chemical properties of boron carbide
Boron carbide has high chemical potential, neutron absorption, wear resistance and semiconductor conductivity. It is one of the most acid-stable substances and is very stable in all concentrated or dilute acid or alkaline aqueous solutions. In the air environment, boron carbide is basically stable at a temperature below 800℃. Because the boron oxide formed by oxidation at a higher temperature is in a gas-phase loss mode, it is unstable, and carbon dioxide and diboron trioxide are formed by oxidation .
When some transition metals and their carbides coexist, boron carbide has special stability. Boron carbide forms metal borides through the strong reaction of Group IV, V and VI transition metals in the periodic table with boron carbide powder at 1000~1100℃. However, at higher reaction temperatures, some literature reports indicate that boron carbide is easy to nitride or react with some other transition metal oxides to form corresponding boron nitride and boride. This boride is composed of rare earth and alkaline earth metals. There are many hexaborides
number form. Due to factors of preparation methods, boron carbide is prone to form carbon defects, which leads to a wide range of boron-carbon ratio without affecting its crystal structure, which often leads to a reduction in the physical and chemical properties of boron carbide. Such defects are often difficult to resolve by powder diffraction, but often require chemical titration and energy loss spectrum determination.

Application of boron carbide
Boron carbide is mainly used in structural materials, chemical raw materials, electrical properties, nuclear properties, composite ceramics, etc. Among them, in terms of structural materials, due to its high hardness, it can be made into abrasives for the processing of various hard metals, corundum or glass, and wear-resistant boron carbide devices can also be made; in addition, externally applied boron carbide The material can also be used as a cutting edge and other tools; it can also be used for helicopter light armor, bulletproof vests, correction tools, etc. In chemical raw materials, it can be used as a boronizing agent for steel or other alloys to boronize the steel surface, thereby generating a thin layer of iron boride to enhance the strength and wear resistance of the material. It can also be used as an additive for some metal-based friction materials.
